We're excited to announce the biggest upgrade to AI Photo Check since launch: AI Image Detector V2, powered by a state-of-the-art Large Language Model. Unlike traditional AI detectors that output a simple confidence score, V2 provides detailed, human-readable analysis reports that explain exactly why an image appears to be AI-generated — or authentic.

V2 is now the default detector on our homepage, while the original 17-method ensemble detector (V1 Classic) remains available at /ai-image-detector-v1.

How LLM Detection Works

Instead of running multiple neural network classifiers in parallel (like V1), the V2 detector sends your image to our PhotoCheck AI LLM — a specialized analysis pipeline built on Google Gemini 2.0 Flash. The LLM examines your image across multiple dimensions:

• Visual Artifacts — Inconsistent details like melting jewelry, impossible reflections, or geometric watermarks
• Texture & Surface Analysis — Unnaturally uniform skin, smooth transitions, or missing micro-variations
• Lighting & Shadow Consistency — Shadow edges, light source direction, and physically impossible illumination

🛡️ SynthID Watermark Detection

V2 includes SynthID checking — Google's invisible digital watermark technology. If an image was generated by Google's AI tools (Imagen, Gemini), the watermark helps confirm its origin.

🧪 Technical Forensic Scanning

Beyond the LLM analysis, V2 also runs local forensic checks including metadata analysis, JFIF header examination, noise pattern analysis, and C2PA content credential verification. These technical checks are combined with the LLM's visual analysis for a comprehensive result.
